Elections 2009 has begun to draw to a close with the Independent Electoral Commission waiting for a handful of outstanding results.
The IEC’s Norman du Plessis said, “We have captured the results, we still awaiting the slips as signed off by the agents to be scanned through to us”.
The African National Congress has won the polls decisively but they have not yet secured a two-thirds majority as they have only secured 65.91% of the votes counted by the IEC at 12.00pm on Saturday.
The Democratic Alliance has retained its position of the official opposition with 16.64% of the vote while the Congress of the People has gained 7.42%.
The figures could change slightly as the very last of the results are collated however a final announcement is expected to be made on Saturday afternoon.
