IEC chair Brigalia Bam has revealed the final 2009 election results at the IEC election centre in Pretoria.
President Kgalema Motlanthe is now addressing the media.
Bam said despite predictions of election violence, few incidents were reported across the country.
She added it was important for every political party to challenge the electorate in delivering on the needs of the people.
ANC WINS OUTRIGHT MAJORITY
The ANC said it was happy with its performance despite missing a two-thirds majority.
There was an air of excitement as politicians, IEC officials and the media waited for the official proclamation from IEC chair Brigalia Bam.
Outgoing President Kgalema Motlanthe was expected to speak, marking the end of a long election road.
The ANC won the elections decisively on both a national and a provincial level except in the Western Cape where the DA won an outright majority with over 51% of the vote.
Election officials had reason to smile with a voter turnout of 77% of registered voters.
The ANC received 65.90% of valid votes cast while the DA received 16.66% and The Congress of the People took 7.42%.
The country’s future president Jacob Zuma will hold his own press conference ahead of celebrations.
