Chief Justice Pius Langa on Wednesday said he was very proud of the Independent Electoral Commission for the way it handled last week’s national and provincial polls.

He took over the election and swearing-in process at the Constitutional Court after receiving the full list of new members of parliament from the IEC.

The chief justice was full of praise for the IEC.

“It is no wonder that for the last few hours when millions of our people took centre stage the whole country was held spell bound,” said Langa.

There was also some official business.

“This of course signals the successful termination of the electoral commission’s mandate,” said Langa.

IEC Chair Brigalia Bam was also in good humour, she finally had some rest.

“Deep sleep, great deep sleep. We are all very exhausted,” said Bam when asked what she would do.

Langa will not go to parliament to swear in the National Assembly.
