A new artwork billed as Johannesburg’s own Statue of Liberty by William Kentrdige and Gerhard Marx was unveiled in the city centre on Wednesday.
It is called Firewalker and is a giant sculpture of a woman walking with a burning light on her head.
Marx said they took their inspiration from female entrepreneurs in the city.
“William also recalled seeing a lot of women selling roasted mealies by the side of the road when he was younger and still people here people washing taxi’s and carrying buckets of water and those kind of things.”
