Two Muslim NGO’s have approached the National Prosecuting Authority, to act against South Africans they claim were involved in war crimes in Gaza.
The groups say there is overwhelming evidence that at least 70 people some with SA and Israeli citizenship carried out operation ’cast lead’ last December.
One thousand four hundred Palestinians, ten Israeli soldiers and two civilians were killed in the three week war.
Former Crime Intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils says South Africa should help ensure that those involved in crimes against humanity are brought to book.
“The request appeals to the authorities to investigate and if found appropriate prosecute in South Africa individuals involved in war crimes.”
But the Jewish Board of Deputies’ Zev Krengel has lashed out at the NGO’s saying they are manipulating the judiciary for political and selfish reasons.
“As a South African citizen I am saddened that people are using our independent National Prosecuting Authority for political gains of an international conflict that is not even in our country never mind our continent.”
