The chairperson of Skeptics South Africa on Sunday warned that many schools are flouting the country’s laws on religion.
The organisation is considering laying criminal charges against schools that pray Christian prayers and read scriptures from the Bible in class or during assembly.
The organisation’s founder Professor George Classen says the national policy on religion in education outlaws such practices.
Classen says he is raising the alarm on behalf of concerned parents.
“We intend to monitor school principals and give them a chance to get their house in order. They must comply with the national policy. As school headmasters they should set a good example to their pupils and not contravene the law”, said Classen.
