There has been a large explosion in an industrial area near the Southgate Shopping Centre in southern Johannesburg.

Details are still sketchy but residents nearby say it sounded like a fireworks factory may have gone up in flames.

Emergency services officials are rushing to the scene and residents say they fear pieces of burning debris might start fires at neighbouring factories.
