NGO urges public awareness on human trafficking

The Salvation Army wants the spotlight to be on human trafficking ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The non-profit organisation says public awareness is increasing steadily but much more can be done.

Rights organisations say international sporting events like the soccer spectacle are draw cards for traffickers.

According to the Salvation Army, 450 000 of the two million people trafficked each year are in Africa.

The NGO says many rural women are lured with promises of work, education and a better life but are prostituted when they arrive in big cities.

The Salvation Army says human trafficking is on the increase and the public needs to be made aware of this.
