No plans to charge freed SA mercenaries

The Justice Department says it has no plans to press charges against four South African men released from prison in Equatorial Guinea earlier this week.

The men were jailed for their involvement in a planned coup to overthrow the oil-rich nation’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema in 2004.

Their leader, Briton Simon Mann, was also released and returned home to the UK but there is no word on when the South Africans will return.

There have been calls for the South African men to face charges at home because the coup plot broke Africa’s Algiers declaration against illegal government takeovers.

The department said it would not take legal action against the men.

Nick Du Toit, Sergio Cardoso, Jose Sundays and George Allerson were sentenced to 34 years in prison but were released ahead of President Jacob Zuma’s visit to Equatorial Guinea this week.

In a strongly worded joint statement on Wednesday, Zuma and Nguema condemned mercenary activity in Africa.
