South African Athletes say they are concerned about the future of the sport in the country following the suspension of Athletics South Africa’s board.
Olympics governing body SASCOC suspended the ASA board on Thursday pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation into their handling of the Caster Semenya saga.
South African Athletes say they believe that things will get worse before they get better.
“We do not know what is going, are we going to have a season next year, who is going to take over or are they going to leave ASA as it is ,” says athletic veteran Geraldine Pillay.
It has been recommended that SASCOC’s Ray Mali elect an Interim ASA board pending the outcome of the disciplinary enquiry against Leonard Chuene and company.
The acting board will be faced with the task of restoring ASA’s image in order for the body to hang on to its sponsors.
Recently, Nedbank pulled the plug on its ASA funding while the Yellow Pages is evaluating its sponsorship.
