Eyewitness News | 2009/11/12 05:54:21 PM

President Jacob Zuma has implemented a seven percent salary increase for all public office bearers backdated to April.

The presidency said Zuma made the decision in light of the current economic situation and the pressure on government finances.

The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers recommended an eight percent increase.

Zuma commended the commission for the thorough manner in which it approached its work and reiterated the importance of its independence.
