The South African Revenue Service says it has been receiving about 5 000 tax returns per hour on Saturday.

The official deadline for returns was midnight on Friday but the taxman has agreed that e-filing can be done until Monday night.

Many SARS offices across the country are open till this afternoon for those who were standing in long queues yesterday.

SARS’ Adrian Lackay says it has been busy countrywide.

“We have more than 5 000 submissions per hour. The Pretoria office is very busy with about 1 500 people queuing at the moment. Carlton Centre has about 500 people queuing and equally Durban is very busy with about 400-500 people,” he said

Meanwhile, police had to be called in at the SARS office in Germiston on Saturday.

They were called in because tax payers demanded that officials attend to them.

“There was a problem with e-filing yesterday so people have come back to submit their tax return,” said the police’s Roelien Marais.
