A constitutional law expert has said he is shocked at the appointment of Menzi Simelane to Head of the National Prosecuting Authority.
Former NPA boss Vusi Pikoli reached an out of court settlement with the state over his dismissal last weekend, paving the way for a decision to be made on his replacement.
Pikoli has been given a golden handshake of more than R7 million and Simelane’s appointment was announced yesterday.
Constitutional expert, Pierre de Vos, said during the Ginwala Commission of inquiry, he found Simelane’s conduct left much to be desired.
“He tried to mislead the commission of inquiry and he had a mistaken idea of the relationship between the minister of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority.”
But Simelane’s appointment is receiving support from certain quarters.
The Western Cape Provincial Head of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development said he had faith in Simelane.
Hishaam Mohammed said he believed Zuma found the best man for the job.
Mohammed added he believed Simelane would make a difference within the NPA.
“The efficiency in a number of areas in justice means that Simelane has been able to make a difference in the criminal justice system.”
