Eyewitness News | 2009/12/01 07:04:54 AM

President Jacob Zuma was expected to use World Aids Day on Tuesday to highlight government’s change in its Aids policy.

UNAIDS said approximately 5.7 million South Africans were HIV positive; more than any other country in the world.

Nearly a thousand South Africans die every day of aids-related diseases.

Former president Thabo Mbeki’s government questioned the link between HIV and Aids and delayed the distribution of anti-retroviral drugs.

He has been asked to step up and apologise for damages brought on by his administration’s policies but Cosatu said it does not want Mbeki criminally charged saying it was not the time for a Nuremberg trial.

Mbeki’s office said he had no comment to make on Aids Day.

Meanwhile, Zuma and his Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi have set a target to get 80 percent of those who need Aids drugs on them by 2011.
