The Gauteng Health Department said on Monday former Health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang remained in a stable condition at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg.

Doctors conducted tests to determine if her body was rejecting the liver she received in a transplant operation in 2007.

A panel of experts met last week to decide whether she should have another transplant.

The Health Department’s Simon Zwane said it was unclear what the Transplant Committee had decided.

“It happens with every patient awaiting a transplant. We look at the report and then make a decision whether the person should get a transplant or not, based on the reports from doctors,” said Zwane.

Tshabalala-Msimang’s first operation was marred by controversy following reports that she was suffering from alcohol-induced cirrhosis.
