Defence and Military Veterans Minister Lindiwe Sisulu on Friday said her department was making sure that soldiers would receive their improved salaries before the end of the year.

The South African National Defence Force has announced a series of salary increases ranging from two to 98 percent.

Sisulu visited the Dunnottar Military Base on the East Rand on Friday to brief soldiers on the changes.

Sisulu told soldiers that government has lived up to its commitment to deliver better salaries.

She said her department had already given incentive bonuses of just under R1 700 to some soldiers.

The minister added the new increases will benefit the lowest earning members of the defence force the most. Their salaries will effectively double.

The new adjustments came into effect on 1 December.

Sisulu said soldiers will get what they are owed before the end of this year.
