The Gauteng health MEC said she plans to investigate the alleged ill treatment of a patient at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Johannesburg.

MEC Qedani Mahlangu visited New Year’s babies at the institution on Friday.

One of the new mothers, whose baby experienced breathing problems, complains nurses failed to explain the infant’s condition to her.

New mother Grace Havazvidi said she was overjoyed to give birth to Gauteng’s first 2010 baby just minutes after the countdown.

“I am so pleased. So happy,” she remarked.

However, her delight soon turned to anxiety when the baby boy began experiencing breathing problems after delivery.

Havazvidi claims maternity ward nurses failed to explain this to her and also refused her access to the infant.

While visiting the ward on Friday, Mahlangu promised to take the matter further.

“Those small little problems that we continue to encounter must be dealt with decisively,” she said.
Mahlangu also said she would keep in touch with the mother to ensure she receives the care she deserves.
