Unions to meet government over parastatals

Trade unions are expecting to hold a summit with government in March to discuss how parastatals are being run.

Labour said parastatals are being mismanaged at the expense of taxpayers.

It is no secret many of the country’s state-owned enterprises are in dire straits.

The Public Enterprises Ministry has in the past admitted it is worried about how some of these parastatals are being run.

For this reason, a summit will be held where unions will make recommendations on how they think government can help floundering parastatals.

Eskom has been plagued by controversy in recent months as former CEO Jacob Maroga is suing the power utility and government, claiming he was unfairly dismissed last year.

The Democratic Alliance has claimed pay out to failed departing chief executive at various parastatals have cost the taxpayers almost R300 million over the past decade.
