Firefighters in Knysna said they are hopeful the cooler weather on Wednesday will help them control a number of blazes around the Southern Cape town.

They battled an overnight blaze in the mountains near Reenendal outside Knysna.

Residents said for the first time this week the town had not been covered in a blanket of smoke.

Firefighters water-bombed the hill and valleys overlooking the town on Tuesday night, in an attempt to control the vegetation fire.

One family living near Reenendal said they got scared when the fire got close to their property. They were forced to evacuate their home.

Southern Cape Emergency Services met at the fire station in an attempt to put together an action plan for Wednesday.

Everyone was hopeful that the heavy mist and drizzle would continue for the rest of the day.
