An Mfuleni crèche owner said on Tuesday she was prepared to fight the City of Cape Town to keep her doors open.

City officials have been threatening to shut down the Buhle Baba Ntwana Day Care Centre.

Official said the centre does not have the necessary facilities and could not accommodate the 200 children enrolled there.

Crèche owner Pumla Gigi said she would resist the closure.

“They say the crèche must be closed because it’s not viable for the children. Where must we take the children to if they are closing this crèche?” said Gigi.

Meanwhile, city health director Ivan Bromfield said they needed to act in the interest of the children.

“It’s about the health and safety of the children. You can’t operate a day care or a centre if you don’t have toilet facilities for the children or potable water for them,” said Bromfield.
