The gay and lesbian community is out to set the record straight.

Hundreds of participants were out in full voice and colourful gear in Cape Town on Saturday for the annual Gay Pride parade.

The event is aimed at raising awareness around gay and lesbian rights.

Loud music and chants of ‘We’re queer and we’re here’ can be heard filling the city streets.

Hundreds of gays and lesbians have come out in full force to celebrate their homosexuality at this year’s parade.

Most of the participants travelling in open top buses are waving rainbow flags and balloons whilst blowing on whistles.

Roy from Uganda told Eyewitness News he is saddened by the treatment they receive in his native country.

Uganda is proposing legislation which further criminalises homosexuality, which leaves many gays and lesbians in the country now facing imprisonment and the death penalty if they expose their sexual orientation.

But many at the parade believe the gay and lesbian community is being recognised more and more as part of society.
