Sustained gunfire has sent residents of the central Nigerian city of Jos fleeing for cover in police barracks.
There were new international calls for those responsible for the hundreds of killings there last weekend, to be brought to book.
It was not clear who was responsible for the volleys of gunshots in the city dangerously skirting the divide between Nigeria’s Muslim north and Christian south. But residents reeling from the deaths of more than 500 Christians only days ago were taking no chances.
Britain and France joined the United States calling for those responsible to be found and prosecuted.
The governor of the central Plateau state Jonah Jang said security chiefs ignored early warnings and that massacre could have been prevented.
