The Road Traffic Management Corporation on Tuesday said while human error played a large role in accidents, the state of the country’s byways and highways were also to blame.
The corporation presented its findings on poor road maintenance and safety to Parliament’s Transport Portfolio Committee on Tuesday.
The corporation told MPs that last year alone 80 percent of fatal crashes on the country’s roads were due to human error, while road environment was only a factor in 10 percent of the cases.
Its statistics revealed that sharp bends were main causes of accidents.
It recommended that crash statistics be used as a guide in making roads safer.
The corporation’s officials admitted that infrastructure had to be improved to save more lives.
