Pakistan reached 16 for one at lunch after Mohammad Asif took five for 77 to help skittle England’s last six wickets for 17 runs on the second morning of the first test at Trent Bridge on Friday.
England (331 for four overnight) lost their fifth wicket on 337 and were bowled out for 354 after lasting 75 minutes on Friday.
Asif’s gentle out-swingers caused havoc and all four of his victims in the morning session were lbw including Eoin Morgan for 130. His spell was four for eight in 23 balls.
Pakistan’s spirited fight-back was checked when England fast bowler James Anderson removed opener Salman Butt for one, after he pushed at a ball on off stump. Anderson had figures of one for one off four overs at lunch. Imran Farhat was 9 not out and Azhar Ali was on 6.
Pakistan, seeking to avenge their 3-0 series loss in England in 2006, began the day needing early strikes but Morgan was dropped on 129 by Farhat at first slip off the impressive Mohammad Aamer.
In the next over Asif trapped Paul Collingwood lbw for 82 after he added one run to his overnight score. With one referral remaining, the batsman chose to utilise it after a mid-pitch discussion with Morgan but replays upheld umpire Tony Hill’s decision.
Collingwood and Morgan put on 219 for the fifth wicket for an England record against Pakistan.
Asif removed Morgan four overs later as the batsman struggled to fathom the discreet movement he was getting. Morgan’s innings, which should cement his place for the Ashes tour from November, spanned 216 deliveries with 19 boundaries and the one six that he raised his century with.
Asif added the wickets of Graeme Swann (2) and James Anderson (0) in consecutive balls, while Matt Prior (6) was run out attempting a third run after a mix-up with Swann and Stuart Broad (3) was bowled by Umar Gul.
The sell-out crowd at Nottingham could be set for more wickets with the dry, cracked pitch offering turn for the spinners, swing for the faster bowlers while the weather remains overcast, and uneven bounce.
