The South Africa Against Drunk Driving Organisation has called on motorists to do the right thing by partying responsibly.
It said the number of drunk driving-related deaths on the country’s roads has reached alarming proportions.
About 9,000 people die as a result of drunk driving every year.
Spokesperson Caro Smit said, “People need to learn about units of alcohol. They need to know that very, very little alcohol makes you over the legal limit, and if you’re over the legal limit, then you’re a danger on the road.”
Meanwhile, Paarl police have warned the public they will not tolerate any irresponsible or drunk driving during Saturday’s annual inter-school clash between Boys’ High and Paarl Gimnasium.
Officials will be manning various road blocks in the area and visiting bars to verify patrons’ ages.
